The Physician Assistant at Orthopaedic Institute of Dayton assists in the medical and surgical care of patients in outpatient, inpatient, and surgical settings under the supervision of attending physicians. The role involves patient evaluations, procedures, surgical assistance, inpatient management, and participation in multidisciplinary care, with responsibilities extending to after-hours and weekend coverage as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Attend outpatient clinics, perform initial evaluations, and provide longitudinal patient care.
  • Obtain medical histories, conduct physical examinations, and order/review diagnostic tests such as radiographs, MRI, CT scans, EMG, and DEXA scans.
  • Perform procedures including fracture management, joint injections, aspirations, and other minor interventions under supervision.
  • Develop and implement care plans in collaboration with supervising physicians and document all patient interactions promptly.
  • Provide preoperative and postoperative patient education and communicate with patients, families, and healthcare team members.
  • Assist in surgical procedures as first or second assistant, including patient preparation, surgical exposure, and wound closure.
  • Manage inpatient care, including ordering tests, medications, and participating in multidisciplinary rounds.
  • Respond to after-hours calls, assist with emergency management, and support hospital and clinic coverage as required.

Requirements

  • If prescriptive authority is requested, must demonstrate eligibility as approved by the Ohio Medical Board.
  • Maintain CME hours (50 hours Category 1 and 50 hours Category 2) every two years and recertify every six years.
  • Ability to perform clinical procedures such as casting, injections, and suturing under supervision.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Physical ability to perform tasks including standing, walking, lifting up to 50 lbs, and working in a busy clinical environment.
  • Basic computer skills and understanding of electronic medical records and CMS guidelines for E&M coding.
  • Willingness to work variable hours, including evenings, weekends, and on-call responsibilities.
