Surgical Services Physician Assistant

The Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner provides direct diagnostic and therapeutic patient care in surgical services, including trauma, emergency general surgery, bariatrics, colorectal, plastics, and surgical breast oncology. The role involves inpatient coverage on a 13-hour rotating day and night shift, collaborating with physicians and multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care in a hospital setting.

Responsibilities

• Assess, triage, and manage patient care throughout the disease process as part of an interdisciplinary team, in inpatient, ambulatory, or outpatient settings.
• Obtain medical histories, perform physical examinations, review diagnostic and radiologic results, and develop treatment plans.
• Perform procedures, prescribe treatments and medications within scope and guidelines, and manage pre- and post-operative patient care.
• Assist in operative cases as a first or second assistant, utilizing manual dexterity and fine motor skills.
• Educate patients and families on care plans, treatment options, potential side effects, and discharge instructions.
• Provide psychosocial support to patients, families, and significant others in a professional and compassionate manner.
• Ensure accurate documentation of clinical encounters in compliance with hospital and regulatory standards, maintaining patient confidentiality.
• Engage in professional development activities, serve as a clinical resource, and participate in quality improvement and research projects.

Shift & Schedule

Requirements

• Graduate from an accredited Physician Assistant Program.
• Current PA certification from the NCCPA and Connecticut State Physician Assistant License.
• ACLS/BLS certification; additional certifications such as PALS, NRP, or DEA license may be required based on specialty.
• Experience in surgical specialties preferred but not required; new graduates are welcome.
• Ability to work variable 13-hour day and night shifts, including on-call and trauma response.
• Strong clinical assessment, procedural skills, and ability to collaborate effectively within a team.

• Ability to manage complex cases and make sound decisions in high-pressure environments.
• Excellent communication skills for patient education and team coordination.
