The position involves serving as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant within the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP) and Emergency Department at Stony Brook University Hospital. The clinician will conduct psychiatric evaluations, develop treatment plans, and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to provide acute psychiatric care, including assessment and intervention for various mental health conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct psychiatric evaluations and assessments for patients in the emergency psychiatric setting.
  • Implement psychopharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions.
  • Make level-of-care recommendations based on patient assessments.
  • Involve families and obtain collateral history as needed for accurate diagnosis and treatment planning.
  • Collaborate with ED, CPEP, inpatient, and consultation liaison physicians, as well as ED nurses, social workers, and counselors.
  • Assist in screening, intervention, referral to treatment, and discharge planning.
  • Provide education and training to staff and trainees.
  • Address conditions such as delirium, dementia-related behavioral symptoms, depression, anxiety, suicide risk, and substance use disorders.

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • W-2 tax status.

Shift & Schedule

  • Full-time, afternoon shift.
  • Typically four 10-hour shifts per week, from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM.
  • Schedule includes weekends.
  • Variable days and hours within the shift timing.

Requirements

  • Master's degree (or foreign equivalent) in Nursing for Nurse Practitioners or in Physician Assistant studies from an ARC-PA accredited program.
  • Nurse Practitioner Certification in Psychiatry or NCCPA certification for Physician Assistants, or in possession by start date.
  • Valid New York State license as a Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant.
  • Clinical experience in an acute psychiatric setting and/or consultation-liaison psychiatry.
  • Experience in de-escalation techniques.
  • Teaching experience is preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • Excellent communication and assessment skills.
  • Availability to work full-time, afternoon shifts, including weekends, typically four 10-hour shifts per week.
  • Must successfully clear a background investigation.
