The Advanced Practice Provider (APP) in the Outpatient Care Unit (OCU) at OHSU provides overnight post-operative care for patients following surgery or procedures requiring up to two nights of stay. The role involves comprehensive patient assessment, management of acute and chronic conditions, coordination of discharge planning, and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams to optimize patient outcomes and experience. The APP also participates in clinical education, quality improvement initiatives, and research activities as part of their professional responsibilities.

Responsibilities

  • Perform comprehensive physical assessments and develop evidence-based treatment plans for postoperative patients.
  • Manage acute and chronic health problems, interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe medications and therapies.
  • Coordinate patient discharge planning and ensure timely documentation of clinical notes and significant events.
  • Partner with surgical and procedural teams to escalate care when necessary and manage emergency situations.
  • Educate patients and families on post-operative care, health maintenance, and disease prevention.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, clinical research, and scholarly activities to enhance patient care standards.
  • Support the training and supervision of medical students, residents, and advanced practice learners.
  • Adhere to organizational policies, scope of practice, and professional standards in all clinical activities.

Compensation

  • Salary commensurate with experience.
  • W-2 tax status.

Shift & Schedule

  • Variable schedule with 12-hour night shifts.
  • Shifts typically from 7:00 pm to 7:30 am, in a 4-week rotation.

Requirements

  • Completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant program with a conferred degree (MS, MPAS, DHSc, DMSc, or DNP).
  • Current licensure as an ACNP, AGACNP, or PA, with appropriate certification and licensure as required by governing boards.
  • At least 2 years of advanced practice experience in acute or critical care, preferably with surgical patients.
  • Current ACLS and BLS certifications.
  • Ability to manage a heavy workload with multiple priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with electronic medical records, including Epic EMR, and standard office software.
  • Willingness to participate in clinical research activities and ongoing professional development.
  • Ability to work 12-hour night shifts, with variable scheduling over a four-week period.
  • Ability to handle exposure to body fluids, tissues, radiation, and infectious materials as part of the clinical environment.
