The Cleveland Clinic Critical Care Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship is a 12-month, full-time training program designed to prepare post-graduate Acute Care Nurse Practitioners and Physician Assistants to deliver comprehensive critical care services to critically ill adult ICU patients. The program emphasizes clinical skills, critical thinking, and evidence-based practice through didactic learning, simulations, rotations, and professional development, culminating in highly skilled APPs in critical care medicine.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct thorough medical histories and physical examinations, and initiate appropriate diagnostic tests to evaluate patient health status.
  • Develop and implement patient treatment plans under supervision, including routine procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, and wound care.
  • Perform and interpret routine diagnostic procedures, including laboratory, radiologic, and cardiographic tests, recognizing deviations from normal.
  • Perform specialized procedures such as bone marrow biopsies, blood draws, spinal taps, thoracentesis, and paracentesis as directed by supervising physicians.
  • Educate patients on their disease processes, treatments, medication side effects, and preventive health topics.
  • Assist in managing complex illnesses, including supporting surgical procedures and responding to life-threatening situations.
  • Document patient encounters, complete medical records, and transcribe lab data and routine correspondence under supervision.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, discharge planning, and ensuring regulatory compliance for inpatient care.

Compensation

  • Full-time, salaried position with a salary paid on a semi-monthly basis.
  • Employment is for a maximum of one year, with benefits as outlined in the Total Rewards Brochure.

Shift & Schedule

  • Variable schedule including days, evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Approximately 50 hours per week, with rotations varying weekly.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Adult Gerontology Acute Care Nursing or Physician Assistant Studies from an accredited program.
  • Current Ohio license as a Registered Nurse (for NPs) or Physician Assistant (PA-C).
  • National certification as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse or Physician Assistant, as applicable.
  • Eligibility for DEA licensure.
  • Current BLS/ACLS certification; PALS or NRP may be required based on work setting.
  • Ability to perform advanced assessment, diagnosis, and invasive procedures within clinical privileges.
  • Critical thinking skills, decisive judgment, and ability to work independently in a high-stress environment.
  • Good communication skills, both verbal and written.
  • Physical ability to stand and walk for extended periods, perform manual dexterity tasks, and lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Compliance with institutional policies including infection control, drug testing, and vaccination requirements.
