The Physician Assistant at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital provides inpatient and outpatient medical care in a public health hospital setting. Under supervision, the PA conducts patient evaluations, prescribes treatments, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, and participates in multidisciplinary team activities to support patient recovery and community health initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Evaluate and examine patients through medical histories, physical exams, and laboratory tests.
  • Prescribe medications and treatments tailored to patient needs.
  • Perform and interpret routine and specialized diagnostics, including lab work, imaging, and electrocardiography.
  • Carry out therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, and fracture management.
  • Counsel patients on physical and mental health, disease prevention, and family planning.
  • Provide care for community and correctional health patients in inpatient settings.
  • Independently perform life-saving evaluations and therapeutic interventions.
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date electronic medical records.

Compensation

  • Salary based on experience, education, and internal pay structure.
  • W-2 tax status.

Shift & Schedule

  • Covers 4 weekends and one holiday for ventilator and subacute inpatient care.
  • Schedule includes variable days and call responsibilities.

Requirements

  • Expertise in physical diagnosis, including medical history-taking and evaluations.
  • Knowledge of electrocardiography and diagnostic radiology fundamentals.
  • Familiarity with medical records and terminology.
  • Awareness of safety practices in medical facilities.
  • Graduate of an approved Physician Assistant training program recognized by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health.
  • Ability to work independently under supervision, including participation in rounds and reviews.
  • Strong clinical assessment and procedural skills.
  • Effective communication and counseling skills.
  • Compliance with vaccination requirements for COVID-19 and Influenza.
  • Preferred: Suboxone Waiver certification.
